LAMONT MAKES WAVES
It was a busy time for globe-trotting Kiwi motocross racer Kayne Lamont at the weekend as he tackled two club days in the United Kingdom.
It was a superb build-up to the Suzuki star’s first crack at the European 125cc Motocross Championships, set for France this coming weekend.
On Sunday (May 30) the BikesportNZ.com/MotoGB Suzuki rider tackled the Waterstone School Boys Club Day, staged on hard pack natural terrain. He was in the senior 125/250 under 19 years class, with 36 riders under starter’s orders.
“Some things remain the same no matter what part of the world you race in, we had to wait an hour or so for the Ambo’s,” said Lamont.
“Here they do not have a briefing and no lead rider for practice. Practice was only three laps due to running late so didn’t get much time to learn the track. When you get your peg for gate pick it is not the number on the peg corresponding to the gate but you actually get that pick of the gate and I got peg 36 so he had last gate pick … I’m sure it was rigged.”
There was an uphill grass start and Lamont didn’t a good start he was around sixth spot when the rider in front of him went down and having nowhere to go went down as well. He was second to last away and rode like a man possessed and made his way past 34 riders to catch the leader on the final lap and passed into first up a long hill climb with three corners left, but slid out on the second to last corner which allowed the leader to get past again finishing a very close second.
For races two and three, Lamont had average starts but made his way to the lead in the first lap and went on to win by half a lap in both cases.
The young man from Mangakino had good pace throughout the races and the team was happy with his first outing on hard pack.
The next day he was racing at a memorial meeting at Pontralias.
It was hard pack natural terrain with man-made jumps and Lamont bwas in the rookies class 125/250 Under 19s, with 40 starters
The line-up included several faster riders that are top runners in the British Youth Champs.
“We only got two laps in practice so had to come to grips with the track quickly.”
This was another uphill grass start and Lamont had another average start and slot into fifth place.
He tried to pass around the outside but got pushed wide and off the track, he dropped about six places before getting back on the track. He pushed hard and was passing on the outside of an uphill straight when a bike that had gone off the track fell in his path hitting his left arm causing him to crash and somersault down the track.
He got back up in last position very sore but continued on. He pushed really hard and made his way up to 15th, but went down again hurting his right shoulder.
After straightening his bars he pushed hard again to finish 10th and set the fastest lap time for that race. His body was pretty battered and bruised with nothing broken so he iced his left arm ready for race two.
Races two and three he got better starts, being second around holeshot corner and took the lead in the first lap and put in some very quick laps, setting the fastest lap and winning race two by 20 seconds and race three by 45 seconds.
Although Lamont had a couple of crashes, he certainly showed plenty of pace and had the crowd on their feet. They were amazed by his corner speed, scrubbing and jumping ability. He had a large fan club by the end of the day.
He has been busy this week getting ready for the EMX125 race in France, his first big international race since arriving in Europe just two weeks ago.
