DO YOU KNOW THESE GUYS?
The BikesportNZ.com photo archive is a treasure trove of classic old snaps.
To illustrate a story we were writing recently, we dug into the archive.
Sadly, there were so many other photos of former Kiwi greats in the archive that would perhaps never again see the light of day … unless we were to publish a book of them or run them on this site from time to time.
So, we have decided that each week we are going to run an archive photo or two – a bit of a guessing game for you. See if you can name the individuals.
We’ll offer you a few clues, but we also want to keep you guessing.
Check back and we’ll give you the answers next week, along with our next “Who’s that?” feature photos.
Clues for photo above:
This man was synonymous with Suzuki in New Zealand in the 1970s and 80s. He was national 125cc motocross champion in 1977 and the No.22 on his bike indicates he was national No.2 in the 125cc class when this photo was taken, at his local track, which was recently purchased by a current Kiwi international who is racing overseas at the moment.
Clues for photo below:
These two riders were truly world class and the street race at which this photo was taken is world class too, and still on the Kiwi race calendar. The system of using letters on bikes was typically reserved for visiting overseas riders but, in this case, it was given to the popular Kiwi who had made such a name for himself internationally, racing at another other big public road event, the notorious Isle of Man races. Unfortunately, this man also died at the Isle of Man. The other rider, pictured here on a Yamaha, won the Australian Superbike Championships on a Kawasaki and then raced the World Superbike Championships for Kawasaki and Honda. The question is, what year did rider No.111 win the Australian Superbike Championships and what other major international stand-alone event did he win on more than one occasion? Oh, that’s just too easy, right?
Last week’s characters revealed:
Naming the two main characters in our No.1 photo last week was easy … Robert Holden and Bob Toomey at the Castrol Six-Hour at Manfeild. But the question was; could you name the man in the background? It is of course current Motorcycling New Zealand president Jim Tuckerman.
The second photo last week showed former New Zealand junior motocross champion Daryl Atkins, getting some last-minute advice from his bike shop-owner father Robin.
A third member of the Atkins family mentioned in the clues last week is Youthstream’s GP motocross track designer in Europe, Greg Atkins.
Well done to those who emailed us with their answers.
