A CLEAN SWEEP
Every post was a winning post for Mangakino’s Kayne Lamont in the Thames Valley at the weekend.
The CMR Red Bull KTM team rider was simply unstoppable as he scorched his way to a hat-trick of wins in the MX2 class at the annual Valley Motocross Championships at Patetonga, near Morrinsville, on Sunday.
And, just to emphasise his dominance, he raced two different models of bike during the afternoon.
The 19-year-old rolled his KTM SX250 two-stroke to the line for the first two of three MX2 class races and, after comfortably winning both of those races, decided to change across to his KTM SXF250 four-stroke for the final outing and he won that race as well.
In all three races, Lamont had to battle through from “mediocre” starts to take the lead each time but he then quickly extended his advantage to win by a massive 14 seconds from Waitakere’s former national champion Ethan Martens (Yamaha YZ250) in the first race and he then eclipsed the fast-starting Martens by four seconds in the next race.
Elsthorpe’s Kieran Scheele (Honda CRF250) finished runner-up to Lamont in the third race, 13 seconds adrift of the Mangakino man.
“It was a pretty comfortable win for me in the end,” said Lamont afterwards.
“I’m feeling pretty fit at the moment and looking forward to my next big event, the Whakatane Summercross just after Christmas.
“The KTM SFX250 was straight out of the crate and we haven’t even done anything to set it up yet. I probably need to focus on riding that bike because that’s what I will have to race when I head across to tackle the Motocross Lites Championships in Australia, starting in April.”
It was a massive day for the entire CMR Red Bull KTM Team at Patetonga, with new recruit Hadleigh Knight scooping nine wins from nine starts and collecting a hat-trick of class wins.
The Atiamuri teenager won both the 15-16 years’ 125cc and the 14-16 years’ 250cc class titles during Saturday’s junior racing and then backed that up by also claiming the senior national 125cc crown the following day, finishing ahead of fellow KTM riders Cohen Chase (Taupo) and Kurtis Lilly (Auckland).
Lamont and Knight have been training alongside one another in recent weeks and this has enabled both riders to stretch themselves.
Lamont signalled thanks to his sponsors and supporters, Patrick Stafford of KTM New Zealand, CMR’s Cannon Smith, Jeff Leisk of KTM in Australia, BikesportNZ.com, Sockmasters, Philip Parry Contracting and Karl Mason Builder.
Meanwhile, the MX1 class at the Valley Champs was won by national MX2 champion Darryll King (Fox DC Fuzion Yamaha YZ450F), the current veterans’ world champion heading off strong challenges from Taupo’s Nick Saunders (Darryl August Kawasaki KX450F), Rotorua’s Michael Phillips (Rowlinson Honda CRF450), Whakatane’s Mitchell Rees (Tony Rees Motorcycles Honda CRF450), Tauranga’s Roydon White (KTM 450SXF) and Tauranga’s Peter Broxholme (Botany Honda CRF450F).
