Maximus Purvis scoring valuable points in AustraliaNew Zealand’s Maximus Purvis has squeezed his way into the top echelon after a stellar performance at round three of the Australian Motocross Championships in New South Wales at the weekend.

With 7-8-4 results in his three MX1 races at the Maitland circuit, Kiwi national MX2 champion Purvis took his 450cc Yamaha to classify seventh overall seventh for the day and also to claim seventh overall for the series.

Meanwhile, it was Luke Clout who won the MX1 class outright in Maitland, kicking off with top qualifier, as well as winning the opening moto and first of the two back-to-back ‘sprint’ motos. Honda’s Kirk Gibbs won the second sprint moto.

That performance added the overall championship lead and MX1 class red plate, with the round victory over Gibbs and Husqvarna’s Todd Waters.

Yamaha’s Clout now leads the MX1 class by three-points over KTM’s Regan Duffy, with Waters third.

The MX2 class provided incredible on track action in Maitland, with the first chink in the armour of red plate holder Kyle Webster and his Honda Racing Australia machine starting to show, as a trio of contenders stepped up to try and make their mark on the round and championship.

No one could quite topple Webster however, who took the opening moto win and fourth in the second moto, securing the round overall by a single point over Jesse Dobson, while Jay Wilson was third overall.

Webster retains his large MX2 lead as a result, with Dobson current standings runner-up and Rhys Budd third.

The next round is a month away, set for Diamond Creek, Wodonga, in Victoria, on July 25.
